I was in charge of photographing images for the brochure of Hōtokuji Ōkajōen.
Hōtokuji Temple was founded in 1558 (the first year of the Eiroku era) by the monk Hōain. The temple’s patron founder was Hōtoku (Shigeaki) Shirai, an ancestor of the Shirai family, an old household from Seta.
In 1851 (Kaei 4), Teisaburō Ōtsuka established a temple school called Shikōjuku (also known as Shikōdō). The school is said to have continued until the early Meiji period, when elementary schools were first established.
With a history spanning over 430 years since the Edo period, the temple’s lush grounds continue to serve as a peaceful retreat for visitors.
